Summary

Diplomatic Medal to Peace and Commerce, issued by the United States of America, 1876. This medal was originally concieved as a gift to foreign diplomats on their departure from the United States by Secretary of State, Thomas Jefferson, in 1790. It was then re-created for America's centenary celebrations in 1876.

Obverse Description

America (as an Indian Princess) seated among bales, an anchor etc. and holding a cornucopia welcomes Mercury, standing facing left wearing cape and winged cap, in the background, a sailing ship; around above, TO PEACE AND COMMERCE; in exergue, IV JULY MDCCLXXVI; in small letters below, C. BARBER 1876; the name of the original artist, DUPRE F. , below Mercury.
