Ludwig Gies was a controversial German artist who created propaganda items for Germany but was better known for addressing the negative aspects of war through his artwork and sculpture. As a result he was labelled a "degenerate artist" by the Nazi regime who confiscated and destroyed some of his work and later dismissed him from his teaching appointment.
