Summary
Minature timber boomerang with the inscription 'I Go to Return'. The boomerang is dated 25 February 1916. Its provenance is not recorded.
An image of the boomerang was used on an Australia Post stamp series commemorating the centenary of World War I. It was part of the $1 'Last 100 days' issue of 2 October 2018, and appeared in the centre row (gutter) of a sheet of 10 stamps featuring a detail of a photo of Lieutenant Rupert Frederick Arding Downes addressing his platoon from B Company, 29th Battalion, near the villages of Warfusee and Lamotte before the advance onto Harbonnieres, France on 8 August 1918 (Australian War Memorial collection E02790). The issue was designed by Lisa Christensen, Three Branches Design.
Physical Description
A timber miniature boomerang with a hole at the apex with a discoloured red, blue and white ribbon tied through it. There is handwritten text on both sides of the boomerang in black ink. There is a hairline crack in the timber, and shiny residue around the crack where adhesive was possibly used to fix the break.
