Summary
Bisque ornamental boot in pink and gold, with green 'Gazeka' (winged frog or globlin) figure sitting on toe. Part of a collection of objects from the Leemings Boot Store.
The Leemings Boot Store group provides a visually-rich record of retail advertising in late 19th century Melbourne. William Leeming apparently arrived in Melbourne from Yorkshire in 1853 and established Leemings in 1885, founding arguably Victoria's most advertised bootery. The Leemings' 'Gazeeka' has become known as a significant character in the history of Australian consumer art (Symbols of Australia - Cozzolino). A Broadmeadows train timetable featuring Leemings advertising effectively documents documents the cross-promotion between public utilities and private retailers.
