Summary
Sign promoting an exhibition auspiced by the Centro Italiano D'Arte (Italian Art Centre), early 1960s. The Centre was formed in 1962 in Melbourne by Italian migrants Ernesto Murgo and fellow artists Marcello D'Amico, P. Petrucelli and Vincenzo Basile. The Centre aimed to promote and gather together local Italian artists and exhibit their work.
Physical Description
Long rectangular painted sign on particle board, with a drill hole at top corner of each end with string threaded through for hanging. Sign painted white with grey painted border and drip effect and text in red, black and blue paint.
Significance
This collection represents the efforts of Italian migrants to congregate local Italian artists, foster their talents and promote their output to the broader community. It demonstrates the importance for many migrants to nurture a collective cultural identity while positioning themselves within the wider Australian community.
