Summary

A black and white image of the second bridge to be built over the Yarra River at the end of Swanston Street connecting the city of Melbourne to the south bank and photographed by A.J. Campbell. Built in 1888 this bridge replaced the single span masonry bridge that A.J. Campbell had also photographed in 1870.

St Paul's Cathedral on the north east corner of Swanston and Flinders Streets can be seen in the background before construction commenced in 1926 to add the three spires.

This is one of many glass lantern slides that form the A.J. Campbell Collection held by Museum Victoria.
