Summary
Black and white image of the entrance to the Big Peninsula Tunnel upstream side on the Yarra River at McMahons Creek in the Yarra Valley, Victoria, dug by hand in 1864 to divert the flow of water away from the natural riverbed to allow prospectors to hunt for alluvial gold, photographed by A.J. Campbell. The tunnel is approximately two metres wide, two metres high and 25 metres long. As water still flows through the tunnel, the natural riverbed has become overgrown with local vegetation.
This glass lantern slide is one of many held in the A.J. Campbell Collection by Museum Victoria.
