Summary

Black and white image of weary travellers resting by the famous mountain ash affectionately known as Uncle Sam at the Hermitage Corner on the Black Spur, a 30 kilometre stretch of road between Healesville and Narbethong in the highlands of Victoria. Part of the Maroondah Highway, it winds its way through spectacular tall trees and ferns, considered to be one of the best tourist drives in Victoria. Originally it was part of the Yarra Track, a strategic route for miners and settlers travelling to the eastern goldfields.

This glass lantern slide is one of many forming the A.J. Campbell Collection held by Museum Victoria.
