This material was issued to Mr Howard Dawson, who was an Air Raid Warden for the City of Camberwell in 1941. It was donated to the State Library of Victoria with a collection of Mr Dawson's papers, and was transferred to the Museum from the State Library of Victoria. Information about Mr Dawson can be found in Who's Who in Australia, 1950 (edited by Joseph A. Alexander; and in the Latrobe Library, LTGMF1, card no. 35.
At the height of the emergency resulting from Japan's advance south in 1942, over 60,000 people in Victoria carried out Air Raid Precautions Warden's duties. ARP personnel were trained by the Metropolitan Fire Brigade. One of their main duties was to patrol the blacked-out streets, requiring home- owners to black-out any lights showing onto the street.Camberwell
