Souvenir in the form of a pocket watch, with watch face on one side and on the rear a coloured, printed view of the Exhibition Building at the time of the Melbourne International Exhibition, 1880.
Physical Description
Watch face has coloured, printed image of domed building. Inscription above. The rear of the case is hinged to reveal a red fabric concertina compartment, which would presumably have contained printed scenes of the exhibition or displays at the exhibition; these are missing.
Significance
A rare example of the cheaply produced souvenirs that were sold or presented at the Melbourne International Exhibition, 1880. The inscription 'Exposition de Melbourne' suggests that the souvenir may have been sold from the French Court or presented by the French Commissioners.
