Tile with painted decoration of a swan and cygnets, manufactured in England, post-1891.
Following the introduction of the Tarrif Act, commonly known as the Mckinley Tarrif Act, in America in October 1890, all imported goods were required to carry the name of the country of origin. The Act, initiated by William Mckinley, was a proctectionist move against foreign competition to America's domestic market, for at the same time the average duty on imports rose sharply to almost fifty percent. However, the implications of that Act mean this tile can be dated post-1891, due to the inclusion of the word 'England' moulded into the reverse of the tile. After 1921, the term applied was 'Made in England'.
