Summary

Black and white silver gelatin photograph taken in the ceiling space of Building 4, Roll Film, Kodak factory, Coburg, November 1958.

This is a view of the ceiling space looking diagonally across the width of the building. The image features a typical fully assembled air conditioning unit that sat on the ceiling above a production area. The unit consisted of removable air filters, a chilled water cooling coil and a steam heating coil. The unit was sealed in a metal framework driven by an external fan, giving a positive pressure to the serviced rooms below. Pneumatic instrumentation and electrical controls were all mounted on the outside of the unit. All coils and filters were accessible through removable side panels. All sensitised products handled in this building required environmental air conditions such as temperature and humidity, to be controlled within narrow tolerances (ideally 21ºC, 50%RH), and to be clean from dust and contaminants that could de-sensitise the coated emulsion.

Kodak manufactured and distributed a wide range of photographic products to Australasia, such as, film, paper, chemicals, cameras and miscellaneous equipment. Its client base included amateur and professional photographers as well as specialist medical and graphic art professionals who used photography, x-ray and other imaging techniques.

This photograph is part of the Kodak collection of products, promotional materials, photographs and working life artefacts collected from Kodak Australasia in 2005 after the manufacturing plant at Coburg had closed down the year before.
