Summary

Black and white silver gelatin photograph of the inside of Building 7, Testing, Kodak factory, Coburg, June, 1958.

This image depicts an open spaced interior with finished solid plaster ceiling and concrete floor, being fitted out with a prefabricated timber modular partition system (proprietary VIA Partition System). A full height fully erected wall appears in the background with the layout of partition tracks (for partitions to be erected) on the floor in the foreground. The partitions had height-adjusting feet at the base which slotted into the metal tracks on the floor, broad tongue-and-groove side edges which provided close fitting joins, tongued tops which slotted into grooved timber tracks on the ceiling, and a decorative skirting which covered the metal feet. There were internal slots in the partition which acted as cable ducts at floor level and just below the ceiling level. Full height solid partitions were mainly used for production rooms (both whitelight and safelight conditions), conference rooms, corridors and light locks, while half height solid and glass partitions were used for some offices.

Kodak manufactured and distributed a wide range of photographic products to Australasia, such as, film, paper, chemicals, cameras and miscellaneous equipment. Its client base included amateur and professional photographers as well as specialist medical and graphic art professionals who used photography, x-ray and other imaging techniques.

This photograph is part of the Kodak collection of products, promotional materials, photographs and working life artefacts collected from Kodak Australasia in 2005 after the manufacturing plant at Coburg had closed down the year before.
