Summary

Black and white silver gelatin photograph of the construction of the Machine Hall and the North Annexe, Building 11 Power House, Kodak factory, Coburg, January 1958.

The first stage of the Power House building consisted of a machine hall with north and south annexes. This is a view of the North Annexe and the north wall of the Machine Hall looking towards the east with a row of shops and residences in Elizabeth Street in the background. The steel frame of the annexe on the left has already been erected and several building workers can be seen starting on the internal brickwork. A row of steel columns forming the north wall including the rails for an overhead crane can be seen being erected on concrete footings. Concrete walled trenches are located south of these columns, one running the full length of the hall and the other across to the south wall. A mobile crane was used for erecting all of the steelwork.

Kodak manufactured and distributed a wide range of photographic products to Australasia, such as, film, paper, chemicals, cameras and miscellaneous equipment. Its client base included amateur and professional photographers as well as specialist medical and graphic art professionals who used photography, x-ray and other imaging techniques.

This photograph is part of the Kodak collection of products, promotional materials, photographs and working life artefacts collected from Kodak Australasia in 2005 after the manufacturing plant at Coburg had closed down the year before.
