Summary
Rectangular cloth badge with an image of a Country Fire Authority (CFA) fire fighter giving a koala (later known as Sam) a drink of water. The badge was made to commemorate the Black Saturday Bushfires in Victoria in 2009.
This badge was manufactured along with 14 other designs, the profits from sales were then donated to the Bushfire Appeal. This fund-raising program was overseen by Superintendent Rod Johns (and VP Police Association). 100 of the 'Sam the Koala' badges were manufactured.
Physical Description
Rectangular cloth badge with image of a fire fighter and a koala on one side, machine embroidered from multicoloured thread. The border has been edged on all four sides with black thread. The back of the badge has been coated with a clear adhesive to protect the threads of the embroidery.
Significance
This badge is significant as an example of the many official and unofficial souvenirs which were produced by organisations and individuals to commemorate the Black Saturday Bushfires. This badge is particularly relevant to the Museum's collection, as it depicts the classic media image of Sam the Koala and her rescuer.
