Summary

'Reed' or grass stem necklaces are known by the Yolngu term girring girring, which also applies to necklaces and jewellery in general. These were made and worn by women and often have elaborate feathered decorations attached.

Physical Description

A multistrand necklace of hollow grass stems threaded onto vegetable fibre string. Appendages are attached at either end consisting of two lengths of human hair string with a tassel of white feathers embedded in resin at the distal end, and a length of feathered string secured at the end with resin. The resin is most likley beeswax.
