This apparatus is most likely the same as that used by Makani Wilingarr in demonstrating how to prepare possum fur for spinning into string which was photographed by Donald Thomson in 1937. The spinning or "mixing" stick is placed inside the basket containing possum fur and rotated to separate the fibres in preparation for spinning it into string. This type is said to be used only when parrot feathers are to be spun into the possum fur string. A hooked stick is used to actually spin the hair string.
