The adze is made with a section of nautilus shell, the edges ground down and thinned to make it sharp. It was used to cut out the centre of a log to make a canoe.

Physical Description

A hafted adze with a shell blade. The section of shell is embedded in resin and a section of wood is bent around this and tied with vegetable fibre string to form the handle.

Few examples are known to exist of this type of adze, most being made of stone or metal.
