Summary

Cabinet containing Foundry type. The type comes from F. T. Wimble, Sydney and carries their pin mark. The cabinet contains ten drawers.

Drawers 1 to 4 have 'Art Script' on the drawer labels. A number of old package labels from Wimble are in some drawers but do not appear to accurately describe the drawer content. Art Script appears in the Victorian Government Printing Office (VGPO) Type catalogue, June 1954, as 'Elegant Script'. The Perth Gothic faces are not listed in this catalogue. These faces appear to have been used in the setting of text matter for maps and plans for the Lands Department.

In April 1913 the VGPO replaced many type founts sending 9 tons of old type metal to Wimbles in Sydney and ordering new founts {See VPRS 787/24 - page172/1488]. This type may date from that purchase.

The cabinet has not been identified as to maker.

Most of Museum Victoria's collection of priinting type is kept in purpose-built cabinets that were used to house type when that type was being used for printing. The type kept in a particular cabinet was not necessarily the type that was originally in that cabinet. The type has been catalogued according to the numbered cabinet it is in. In one case, the 'cabinet' is a museum storage container and not an original type cabinet. However, for the sake of consistency, the type has been catalogued as being in a cabinet.
