Summary
Note: This object includes white superiority messaging. Such attitudes and beliefs are not condoned by Museums Victoria which considers them to be racist. Historical distance and context do not excuse or erase this fact.
Decal sticker with the slogan 'Australian and Proud of It', made in 2009. It is intended for use on a vehicle to show the owner's pride in their Australian national identity.
The use of the Eureka flag harks back to a key event in the formation of Australia's democracy when gold miners flew it as a symbol of resistance at Bakery Hill, Ballarat, in December 1854. The Eureka flag in more recent times has also been used by a variety of political groups and movements which are often anti-establishment or nationalist. It has been used by the Nazi party during the 1970s, by the former Builders' Labourers Federation (BLF), during the 1970s-1980s, and by racist groups since then, including National Action and National Alliance. It was also used during the 2005 Cronulla riots and by the Australian Nationalist Movement to intimidate non-white Australians.
Physical Description
Navy blue decal sticker with the Eureka flag in the centre and a transparent background.
Significance
This sticker is significant because they have been used on people's vehicles to show an increasing pride in Australian national identity, especially during the 2000s. It shows one of the myriad of ways that the Eureka flag has been used and some say abused in the name of various movements, especially those against the establishment.
