It is one of sixty seven postcards dated from the 5 January 1904 to 16 April 1907, all addressed to James Baird Scott and his family living in Paisley, Scotland. Fifty three of the cards are sent from Victoria, Australia, by Marion Flinn and her family and feature Melbourne landmarks and suburbs, scenes from Victoria and New South Wales. Fourteen postcards are sent from various international locations including South Africa, Nigeria, India, Singapore and western Europe apparently by extended members of James Baird's family either holidaying or working.
Physical Description
Sepia image of Collins Street, Melbourne on front of postcard. The image shows a street scene of Collins Street with the Wool Grain Warehouse building on the right and people and transport. Handwritten text around the image. Reverse side shows handwritten address and date stamp. Stamp was removed.
Significance
This collection of early 20th century postcards provides an invaluable pictorial record of urban and rural landscapes in Melbourne,Victoria and New South Wales. It also captures the social and political attitudes and observations of one Melbourne family, relating to domestic and social life, literature, politics, and Australian culture. Themes such as nationalism, the postiion of women and prejudices surrounding Aboriginal Australians, global shipping and communication are also referenced by both the visual iconography and the commentary on the postcards.

Printed: Collins Street, Melbourne. Handwritten text: 37 Albert Street, East Melbourne, Victoria, Australia 5th Jan 1904 'My dear Nettie. I was so pleased when I received your father's p.c. this morning that I just sat down at once to send you and Anna one each in return. If you should ever come as far as Melbourne and enter from the west side this would be the first view you would get of our city. Don't you think it looks very pretty I have already sent your father a view of this street ½ mile lower down and I shall send you more still. For we Victorians are very proud of Collins Street, I just wish you would all come and see us and I'm sure I should make you happy and comfortable and you would see what wonderful towns there are in our Greater Britain. and you would find us very kind too. Just like your dear Grandpa and Grandma and your father and uncles and aunties were to me when I crossed the great ocean. The weather is very warm now and my girls are wearing white dresses while you in dear Scotland are wrapped up from the cold.
