One of 49 photographs in an album from World War I likely to have been taken by Troop (later Lieutenant) G.S. Millar depicting the Light Horse camp in Egypt, 1915, prior to Gallipoli.

Image depicting Lieutenant Hanley who is standing (apparently deceased by the time the inscirption was written) along Captian Cameron who is mounted. Behind these two officers there are other servicemen who are arranged in what looks to be a battle formation.

Lieutenant John Matthew Hanley (actually 'Hanly') enlisted on September 20, 1914 and was assigned to the 5th Light Horse Regiment, C Squadron. Lieutenant Hanly was killed in action at Gallipoli on June 6, 1915. He has no known grave but is commemorated on Panel 3 at the Lone Pine Cemetery. Captain Donald Charles Cameron enlisted on September 30, 1914 and was assigned to the 5th Light Horse Regiment, C Squadron. He returned to Australia on June 27, 1919 as a Lieutenant Colonel.
