Black and white photograph depicting a primary school playground in Melbourne, packed with children at play.
It is one of a group of photographs probably taken by American folklorist Dr Dorothy Howard while she was studying children's games and playlore in Australia under a Fulbright research grant,1954-1955. Her photographs and research have become part of the Australian Children's Folklore Collection at Museum Victoria - part of the UNESCO Australian Memory of the World Register.
Description of Content
Shows a primary school playground in Melbourne, packed with children at play. The recognisable games include cricket, cock fighting, wrestling and ball games. In the school grounds there is a flag pole, metal basket- ball rings on wooden posts, a low hurdle and mature eucalypts. Two-storey brick school buildings are in the background. In the background to the photo there are house roofs, a shop and a bus.
