It is one of a group of photographs probably taken by American folklorist Dr Dorothy Howard while she was studying children's games and playlore in Australia under a Fulbright research grant,1954-1955. Her photographs and research have become part of the Australian Children's Folklore Collection at Museum Victoria - part of the UNESCO Australian Memory of the World Register.
Description of Content
Shows a group of 12 girls, posing while playing 'Statues' in a government school playground in Melbourne in 1954. The playground has a sealed surface, with lines, large dots and crosses marked on it. A wood and wire mesh fence and mature pine and oak trees are in the background. The girls are wearing summer dresses and cardigans.
