It is one of a group of photographs probably taken by American folklorist Dr Dorothy Howard while she was studying children's games and playlore in Australia under a Fulbright research grant,1954-1955. Her photographs and research have become part of the Australian Children's Folklore Collection at Museum Victoria - part of the UNESCO Australian Memory of the World Register.
Description of Content
Shows nine girls playing 'Dog and Bone' in a government school playgound in Melbourne. Two teams of four girls are lined up facing each other, with one girl from each team in the centre, trying to pick up the 'bone'. The play- ground has a sealed surface, with crosses marked on it. In the background are houses and a road, with a wood and wire mesh fence. The girls are wearing summer dresses with cardigans and all have short hair.
