It is one of a group of photographs probably taken by American folklorist Dr Dorothy Howard while she was studying children's games and playlore in Australia under a Fulbright research grant,1954-1955. Her photographs and research have become part of the Australian Children's Folklore Collection at Museum Victoria - part of the UNESCO Australian Memory of the World Register.

Close up of a young girl demonstrating the string game 'Bridge' or 'French Lace'. She is holding the string between her thumb and fore- fingers and it is twisted into a lace pattern. She has a piece of dark cloth across her chest to show the string clearly. The corrugated iron and brick walls of the school buildings are in the background, with two boys looking on.
