It is one of a group of photographs probably taken by American folklorist Dr Dorothy Howard while she was studying children's games and playlore in Australia under a Fulbright research grant,1954-1955. Her photographs and research have become part of the Australian Children's Folklore Collection at Museum Victoria - part of the UNESCO Australian Memory of the World Register.

She has a dark piece of cloth across her chest to show the string clearly. A school shelter shed is visible in the background, containing boys and girls. The children are wearing summer clothing.
