Summary

A 19th century rapaki, a Maori garment made from muka and dyed with paru and iron oxide rich mud and tanekaha or bark dye. This particular one has an asymmetrical kaupapa or body of the garment with long free hanging tassels. The top of the rapaki has taniko with a plaited top. A rapaki can be worn on either the waist or the shoulders, they were replaced by the piu piu, a type of flax skirt in the late 19th century.

Physical Description

A rapaki (short cloak) made from harakeke muka (phormium tenax) dyed with paru (iron oxide rich mud) and tanekaha bark dye. The rapaki is made using the whatu weaving method, a finger weft twining technique and the band is taniko, a decorative border. There are 2 layers to the rapaki.
