Summary

Black and white photograph is a group portrait of Athanasia Papageorgiou and Konstantinos Papadimitropoulos' extended families and friends, about 1963. The photograph was taken after the christening of an unknown child who is being carried by his godmother, centre front.

The mother of the child is Konstantinos' cousin. Athanasia and Konstantinos were engaged, but not yet married, but would still participate in family events as a couple. According to the family, when someone was promised for marriage, they were already accepted as family. Konstantinos is standing behind the godmother holding child, and Athanasia is to the right.

According to the family, the godparent has to provide a brand new outfit for the child, including shoes. The godparent also provides 'boumbounieres', little bags of sugared almonds decorated with a little golden coloured cross to signify that they are for a baptism. They are being held by another woman, to the right of the godmother, on a tray, and will be offered to guests. When there was a special occasion, the extended family was invited.
