The Sands & McDougall Directory lists Thomas Farrell at Ivanhoe Heidelberg from 1865 and Thomas Farrell, senior and junior, as farmers, at Darebin Creek from 1868. Based on the date the family immigrated and on the age of this house, it is possibly the third house that the family lived in on this site.
