View of the entrance to a cement and plaster merchant. The fences are corrugated iron. There is a man standing on a loaded truck in the yard and a woman standing outside. This photograph shows Akhurst & Co Limil Cement and Plaster Merchants in South Melbourne, in the late 1950s - early 1960s. This business belonged to Neil and John Akhurst. Akhurst & Co Limil Cement and Plaster Merchants was started by their grandfather, Sidney Akhurst, in the 1890s. The first store was in Banana Alley, on the banks of the Yarra, in central Melbourne. Later it was moved to 15 Whiteman Street South Melbourne, where the Casino is now. The lime was sourced at Waratah Bay, and came by ship to Melbourne. There was a family connection to Waratah Bay lime kilns and possibly Flinders Island lime as well. The business was bought out by another company in the mid 1970s. The pink Renault car at left belonged to Neil Akhurst.
