Description of Content

View of open farmland with an unmade road and electricity poles. The Dandenong Ranges are in background. There is a car with the hood up on the side of the road, with a man looking into it. This photograph shows an intended building site at Denis Street Mitcham, 1958. When Jack and Joan Allison were engaged, they selected and built a site to build their home in Denis Street, Mitcham. The photograph shows the Dandenongs without a television tower and shows the empty paddocks that would become Mitcham. They think the land used to be an orchard. Canterbury Road is on one side and Whitehorse is on the other, 100 metres away. In the distance in the trees there is an old tram. According to the Allison family, 'an old lady lived there.' The Allison's 54 EH Holden car is visible. The hood is up and someone, possibly Jack Allison, is looking at the engine. The photograph was taken in about May. Jack and Joan Allison moved into their new house in November, straight after they were married. The road was unsealed for about six years. Joan remembers 'There was an echidna in the garden.'
