Description of Content

A small weatherboard house with a tiled roof, and low wooden fence. There are two six paned windows and a small porch over the front door. This photograph shows Jack and Melva Nowell's pre-fabricated home on Seves Street, Altona, about 1950-1952. 'Group Constructions' were the builders advertising how to buy a pre-fabricated home. Jack Nowell negotiated with 'Group Constructions' to build a house on his land at Altona in about 1950. The office was at 205 La Trobe Street Melbourne and the assembly plant was at Racecourse Road, Flemington, on what was known as 'Debneys Paddock'. The company was going broke, and the houses were financed by a government co-operative finance company. At the time, in order to qualify for finance you were required to be part of a co-operative and Jack became the director of the 'La Trobe Number 1 Co-operative Housing Company'. By the time they moved in, it was 1952. The roof was a Hardy Fibro-lite and they had to apply for a special permit to buy it due to building materials restrictions during the housing shortage.
