Two men sitting on the ground, sawing through a stump with a cross cut saw. This photograph shows Brian Watson and an unknown friend sawing a gum tree stump by hand, on the building site of his first home, Greensborough, circa 1958. Brian remembers 'In the days before chain saws you had to fell large gumtrees with a cross cut saw, a bit of a challenge for a city boy! The hardest bit of preparing a house building site by far. This old tree was dead when they cut it down and was on the border of the property where they wanted to build the fence and driveway.' This is part of a series of 18 images contributed by Brian and Vera Watson, showing the construction of their house in about 1958 - 1959 in Greensborough. Brian and Vera worked on the site with friends and family on the weekends, during their engagement. There was a shortage of materials such as bricks, and of labour. Brian was lucky to have a friend who was a builder, Albie Birrell, who gave him advice and help. Vera and Brian would bring a camera and take photographs at each significant stage.
