One man loading cement into a mixer, and another man pushing a wheel-barrow and laughing. This photograph shows John Corrie and Lance Watson mixing cement in a mixer, at the building site of Brian and Vera Watson's first home, Greensborough, circa 1958. Brian Watson remembers that since the materials were delivered to the top of the hill, at a distance form the actual building site, they would transport cement down the hill by wheel barrow, to the building site to pour for the garage slab. They used frame timbers to make a platform to support the concrete until it dried. There were then more steel reinforcing rods to support the concrete. 'Ready made cement had just come out, but it was very expensive. You used to hold working bees to help build the house.' This is part of a series of 18 images contributed by Brian and Vera Watson, showing the construction of their house in about 1958 -1 959 in Greensborough. Brian and Vera worked on the site with friends and family on the weekends, during their engagement. There was a shortage of materials such as bricks, and of labour. Brian was lucky to have a friend who was a builder, Albie Birrell, who gave him advice and help. Vera and Brian would bring a camera and take photographs at each significant stage.
