Description of Content
Studio portrait in profile of woman posing with book and beads in her hand This is a studio portrait of Dame 'Nellie' Melba, given as a gift to the child performer Elvie Greenhatch by the famous singer in 1925. The family remembers that 'Elvie worked with Dame Nellie Melba in the production of 'La Boheme' at the tender age of 10 at His Majesty's Theatre. Elvie was the only child in the Grand Opera Company to be selected to sing solo. She had the honour of being carried on Dame Nellie Melba's shoulder after singing a little song in Italian. When the Dame presented her with this autograph she said she was surprised at such a big voice from a little girl.' Elvie Watson started performing in theatres when she was four years old. According to her family, she later worked as an usherette in theatres like the Comedy and Her Majesty, until she was in her late 80s, when she couldn't see the tickets properly anymore.
