Six little girls in a row, in party dresses and their hair curled in ringlets. This photograph shows Valerie Bayley and her friends, Northcote, 1948. This was Valerie Bayley's birthday party and all her friends were posing in their party dresses. Many of the girls had their hair curled like Shirley Temple. Her friend Dorothy Hick remembers: 'This was achieved by curling your wet hair around cloth rag strips and when it dried you would go to sleep with the rags in your hair.'
