Description of Content
Two women standing on either side of a young man in a lane-way. The man is in a suit, and the women are very similarly dressed, with lace collars on dark dresses. This photograph shows Margaret Beedles (left) with her nephew Jack Beedles and her lifelong companion Alice Bayes, Brunswick, 1934. According to his family, Jack Beedles was born illegitimate: 'The family emigrated from Lancashire when he was 2 and they settled in Yarraville. He was passed off as the youngest son of his grandparents. Margaret was not his sister, but his aunt. Margaret treated him like a younger brother. It was an open secret in the family that 'Mag and Alice' had a relationship, but was rarely openly discussed. It was accepted, but just not talked about. They travelled and lived independently, and travelled with Jack overseas.'
