Description of Content

Woman sitting holding an open book, in front of a wooden desk with lead-light cupboard. This photograph is a portrait of Mrs Nell 'Nellie' Bunting, in her parlour in Drummond Street Oakleigh, 1924. The photograph shows 'Nellie' Bunting, seated by her desk and lead light bookshelf. It was taken by Robert Bunting, her son, when about 9 or 10. According to his daughter Janet: 'He woke up on Christmas morning to discover a Box Brownie Camera next to his bed and took a photograph each of his father and mother right away. They had to sit still for 25 seconds, and Robert remembers his father got very restless.' The desk and book case were also made by his father, Janet believes that the parlour was a room for special occasions. 'People didn't use their parlours as much as people now use lounge rooms.'
