This photograph shows Matthew Kelly aged about 5, driving a horse and buggy, in his family backyard, Windsor, circa 1924. His father Matthew Kelly sr. was involved in the early establishment of horse trotting races in Australia. This photograph was taken in the backyard of the Kelly home in Peel Street Windsor, near Chapel Street. The railway is visible behind the house. According to the family: 'By the age of seventeen Matthew jnr was professionally racing horses at trotting meetings. He won his first race in 1936 at Ascot when he was seventeen. The horse he was driving, 'Cooney Alto', was nineteen years old. In the 1940s he was president of the Drivers Association, and took part in the inaugural Night Trotting Meeting at the Showgrounds, 1947. He was also Chairman of Stewards Harness Racing Board Victoria in the 1980s, Moonee Valley.'
