Staff photograph of owner and staff member standing outside J Kelly Saddler and Harness Maker. Both are wearing aprons. This photograph shows John Kelly and an unknown staff member standing outside his store, J Kelly Saddler & Harness Maker, St Kilda, between the 1860s and 1870s. John Kelly immigrated to Australia from Ireland with his brothers and sister Peter, Michael and Elizabeth in 1864. After three years he set up his saddlery business in St Kilda. He ran the business until he died on Christmas Day 1900. The business kept going until 2000 when his grandson Matthew Kelly jnr died. He had made harnesses for the Clydesdales for Carlton & United Breweries. This is the earliest view of this property.
