Description of Content

This stereograph shows twin images of Chinese men traditionally dressed stand with a gong, banners, and possibly a Dragon under an elaborate Chinese styled arch. A Chinese man in Western dress walks alongside. This stereograph shows the procession and arch assembled by the Chinese community of Melbourne to celebrate the arrival of the Duke of York, May 1901, for Federation celebrations. This stereograph came from a collection of Melba Ryan's grandparents, Josephine and Martin Nowlan. A lot of them were bought around Federation as souvenirs. They were passed down to Melba's mother, Doris Holden, who passed them down to her.
