Description of Content

A one-legged man, standing in a field with a dog. A caravan and a 'Big Top' tent are behind him. This photograph shows Adolphus Holden of Holden Brothers Circus, with the photographer Doris Nowlan's shadow in the foreground, circa 1915. Adolphus had a greyhound dog with him. His granddaughter Melba remembers: 'The greyhounds would perform in circus acts. The performers would sleep in trucks. They were like caravans, packed with equipment for travelling, and emptied out to put the show together. There was a bed, drawers and enough room inside for personal things. The Holdens and other circus people would then sleep in them of a night'. The 'Big Top' tent is behind Adolphus. Melba remembers that the size of the circus would ebb and flow as the seasons changed. 'You would meet up and tour together for a few weeks, then leave and join another circus. Sometimes circuses would join forces and travel together as well.' The location is unknown.
