Summary
Foolscap folded pamphlet or leaflet entitled 'Septic Tank System for Farms and Isolated Dwellings 1950', issued by J. Whitlock Secretary of Health, 295 Queen Street, Melbourne for the Commission of Public Health, Department of Health, Victoria. Printed by W.M. Houston, Government Printer, Melbourne.
The publication describes how to construct and operate an in-ground domestic septic tank system suitable for the treatment for sewage from a 'water closet' or 'W.C.' type flush toilet with sections headed "Construction of the Tank", "Disposal of Effluent", "General Information" and "Warning" - the latter cautioning the householder against the use of disinfectants which may kill the useful bacteria which enable the system to effectively treat the effluent. On pages 2-3 there are several line drawings showing cross-section and plan views of different septic tank designs which could be constructed in concrete or brick. The drawings are signed E.A. Hepburn, Chief Engineer, W.C.49
