This is one of 959 photographs (or images) of the Exhibition Building collated by the Exhibition Trustees as a 10 volume pictorial history of the Exhibition Building spanning the years 1880 to 1985. The pictorial history was instigated by the centenary of the Exhibition Building in 1980 and forms part of a larger Royal Exhibition Building collection of documents, photographs, objects and research files.

The image depicts Sir Eric Pearce giving a brief address on the history of the Exhibition Buildings from a lectern on the southern side of a temporary dais errected at the eastern entrance to the Royal Exhibition Buildings for the singing of the National Anthem as part of the centenary address. Seated on the dais to his left are Her Royal Highness Princess Alexandra, her husband the Hon Angus Ogilvy, the Victorian Premier, Rupert "Dick" Hamer, the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress, as well as members of the Exhibition Trustees and their spouses. There is a printed caption below the photograph.
