Summary

Colour photograph showing parked delegates' cars and Victoria Police motorcycle escorts in the eastern forecourt of the Great Hall, Royal Exhibition Building, during the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting held between 30 September and 7 October 1981.

This is one of 959 photographs (or images) of the Exhibition Building collated by the Exhibition Trustees as a 10 volume pictorial history of the Exhibition Building spanning the years 1880 to 1985. The pictorial history was instigated by the centenary of the Exhibition Building in 1980 and forms part of a larger Royal Exhibition Building collection of documents, photographs, objects and research files.

Description of Content

View looking southwards from near the main entrance of Centennial Hall along the avenue of flags towards the delegates' car and Victoria Police motorcycles parked around the eastern forecourt of the Great Hallm Royal Exhibition Buildings, during the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in 1981. In the foreground are the flowerbeds of the Centennial Gardens, while in the middleground a Victoria Police officer can be seen near the forecourt's central round-about.

Significance

Ten photographic albumbs maintained by the Exhibition Trustees' provide an invaluable visual record of the history, use, changes and restoration of the Exhibition Buildings prior to the building being recognised with a World Heritage Listing in 2004.
