Colour photograph showing the departure of delegates from the main entrance of Centennial Hall, Royal Exhibition Building, for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting held between 30 September and 7 October 1981.

This is one of 959 photographs (or images) of the Exhibition Building collated by the Exhibition Trustees as a 10 volume pictorial history of the Exhibition Building spanning the years 1880 to 1985. The pictorial history was instigated by the centenary of the Exhibition Building in 1980 and forms part of a larger Royal Exhibition Building collection of documents, photographs, objects and research files.

Description of Content

View from an elevated vantage point on the eastern side of Nicholson Street showing the departure of delegates from Centennial Hall, Royal Exhibition Buildings, for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in 1981. The Grollo Fountain is shown in the left foreground and is reflected in the glass facade of the Hall. Various groups of people, including media and Victoria Police officers and motorcyclists, can be seen around the driveway at the front of the Hall.

Significance

Ten photographic albums maintained by the Exhibition Trustees' provide an invaluable visual record of the history, use, changes and restoration of the Royal Exhibition Building prior to the building being recognised with a World Heritage Listing in 2004.
