Summary

Colour photograph of one of the decorative woolen murals that hung in the Heads and Ministers Lounge in Centennial Hall, Royal Exhibition Building, during the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting held between 30 September and 7 October 1981.

This is one of 959 photographs (or images) of the Exhibition Building collated by the Exhibition Trustees as a 10 volume pictorial history of the Exhibition Building spanning the years 1880 to 1985. The pictorial history was instigated by the centenary of the Exhibition Building in 1980 and forms part of a larger Royal Exhibition Building collection of documents, photographs, objects and research files.

Description of Content

View of an an abstract tapestry mural produced in wool and comprised of strong strokes interspersed with daubs of colour with that hung in the Heads of Government and Ministerial Lounge in Centennial Hall, Royal Exhibition Building, during the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting held at the Royal Exhibition Building in 1981. The mural hangs above a loose arrangement of couches and arm chairs, centered around a circular wooden coffee table. An orange phone can be seen on the far right of the image next to a cylindrical bin and ash tray.

Significance

Ten photographic albumbs maintained by the Exhibition Trustees' provide an invaluable visual record of the history, use, changes and restoration of the Exhibition Buildings prior to the building being recognised with a World Heritage Listing in 2004.
