Summary

Colour photograph looking southwards from the balcony in the northern transept of the Great Hall, Royal Exhibition Building, of the CHOGM Club facilities and, in the background, the 'Australia Exhibition' during the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting held between 30 September and 7 October 1981.

This is one of 959 photographs (or images) of the Exhibition Building collated by the Exhibition Trustees as a 10 volume pictorial history of the Exhibition Building spanning the years 1880 to 1985. The pictorial history was instigated by the centenary of the Exhibition Building in 1980 and forms part of a larger Royal Exhibition Building collection of documents, photographs, objects and research files.

Description of Content

View of the CHOGM Club situated in the northern transept of the Great Hall, Royal Exhibition Building, during the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting held at the Royal Exhibition Building in 1981. The balcony railings are covered in yellow hoardings with the green and gold 1981 CHOGM logo on them, while at ground level a series of circular white tables with steel-tube framed chairs are set-up. Further back, underneath the dome, can be seen the temporary partition-walls of the 'Australia Exhibition', displayed in the Great hall during CHOGM.

Significance

Ten photographic albumbs maintained by the Exhibition Trustees' provide an invaluable visual record of the history, use, changes and restoration of the Exhibition Buildings prior to the building being recognised with a World Heritage Listing in 2004.
