Summary

One of 185 black and white photographs in an album, taken in France during World War I by Sergeant John Lord. Some pages are blank. Photographs in the album depict army camps, hospitals, trenches, early tanks, landscapes, cemeteries and graves and groups of posed Australian soldiers. The places Lord mentions in his captions are La Boiselle, Quarry Siding, Pozieres, Albert, Bapaume and Favreuil.

The album was one of many souvenirs brought back to Australia after World War I by John Lord (service # 6252). He donated photograph albums, images, documents and World War I memorabilia to Museum Victoria. The same tank is photographed in MM 120152, MM 120153, MM 120154, MM 120155, MM 120156, MM 120157 , MM 120158 and MM 120177.

It would seem that the photographs in this album follow on from the photograph album ST40491. Where ST40491 was concerned more with châteaux, travelling, horses and men resting, this album shows more of the hardships and difficulties of war. For example, there are more photographs of cemeteries and graves, ruined buildings, craters and their camps in the snow. There are quite a few photographs of graves and the photographs of individual graves often have a soldier standing next to them.
